Gazprom Neft improves reservoir management by using AI

Gazprom Neft has successfully completed a trial of its proprietary digital oil recovery efficiency enhancement system. The software helps analyze thousands of field development scenarios and choose the best options. The system’s designers from the company’s Science and Technology Center expect to achieve an economic gain of over 500 mln rubles through the introduction of the new digital product only at the pilot fields of Gazpromneft-Vostok and Slavneft-Megionneftegaz over the next five years.

The ERA:OptimA artificial intelligence system optimizes all the field development processes and helps choose the most effective layout for new wells and operating conditions of existing wells based on 3D modeling. The system was put to trial at the re-engineering project of Gazpromneft-Vostok Krapivinskoye oil field. The selected optimal field development scenario will help increase the project’s profit margin by 300 mln rubles in the midterm. At Achimovskoye field operated by Slavneft-Megionnneftegaz, the new digital tool has offered an effective solution that will help increase production by more than 8%, and project profit margin — by 11%.

Until recently, the calculations and analyses during the development preparation phase were by far a manual process. It would take almost one week to evaluate just one scenario. Today, the system automatically positions the wells, defines their management parameters, initiates oil production calculation, analyzes the economics, and then offers a series of the most effective scenarios for the operator to choose.

The estimates indicate that the scenarios offered by the system are 20–30% more cost-effective than the options based on manual evaluations. The new digital assistant helps cut the number of routine operations carried out by engineers when choosing the production scenarios by some 80%, and the optimized algorithm helps analyze only the potentially promising scenarios.

ERA:OptimA system was developed within the framework of the ERA (Electronic Asset Development) domain of Gazprom Neft’s Technology Strategy.

Mars Khasanov, Gazprom Neft’s Technology Director, CEO at Gazpromneft Science and Technology Center:

«Electronic Asset Development is a package of digital products that help us optimize our entire oil production chain. Each piece of software in that package works in synergy to augment the overall performance. Thanks to our vast experience in oil field development and high-quality expertise, we manage to select successful algorithms for handling the majority of routine tasks. The less routine for engineers, the better they perform».

ERA (Electronic Asset Development) is Gazprom Neft’s strategy for development of digital exploration and production projects that encompasses all the key business dimensions of the company, including geological exploration, geology, drilling, development, oil production, and field infrastructure. The project was launched in 2012, incorporated into Gazprom Neft’s Technology Strategy in 2014, and is one of the Technology Strategy’s focal domains. In 2018, the strategy was updated in accordance with new operational and business objectives of Gazprom Neft’s subsidiary companies. Almost 40 different projects under the ERA strategy are being implemented at the moment.
