Gazprom Neft to continue research and development with St Petersburg Polytechnic University

Alexander Dyukov, CEO and Chairman of the Management Board, Gazprom Neft, recently made a working visit to Peter the Great St Petersburg Polytechnic University’s (Polytech’s) “Technopolis”, where he discussed plans for cooperation in knowledge-intensive and advanced technologies with university senior management.

Initial outcomes of the company’s joint initiative with Polytech, part of the Center for Artificial Intelligence in Industry, agreement on which was signed at the 2019 St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF-2019), were discussed with Polytech Rector Andrei Rudskoi. Gazprom Neft and Polytech specialists are, already, working on developing an algorithm with machine-learning elements for processing seismic data, including combining these with well data in field modelling.

Gazprom Neft and Polytech will also, this year, be finishing work on developing digital modules for the first-ever Russian-made fracking simulator, CyberFrac, the features and benefits of which are expected to exceed those of international alternatives. Initial estimates suggest this technology will result in fissure characteristics being reproduced 10–20 percent more accurately in modelling subsoil operations — facilitating production gains of up to five percent per well.

Alexander Dyukov and Andrei Rudskoi have agreed to develop cooperation between the Gazprom Neft Science and Technology Centre and the university’s research laboratories in hydrodynamic and geo-mechanical modelling, drilling analytics, digital reserve-inventory management, and cost-control in field development. New and promising areas for development have also been identified, including: research into new low-temperature alloys and polymers for Arctic projects; import-substitution-driven equipment engineering; computational technologies; and establishing a cloud-based library and virtual testing ground for digital models.

Work will also continue through the Gazpromneft—Polytech educational centre, on which basis a partner MSc programme, “Mathematical Modelling in Oil and Gas Production Processes” is being implemented. Those already holding Masters degrees in other areas will also be able to complete a further university programme in procurement management at oil and gas enterprises. Every year Polytech students complete internships and work experience at the Gazprom Neft Science and Technology Centre, potentially leading to employment at the company on completing their education. In addition to this Polytech has, for the past three years, partnered Gazprom Neft’s regional “Developing Talent” programme on oil and gas challenges for students.
